I like the traditional quincunx- hastati in front, principes behind, and the triarii in the rear, with a small amount of cavalry on the wings and velites far ahead, in a checkerboard pattern. ---V---V---V---V---V--- H---H---H---H---H---H ---P---P---P---P---P T----T---T---T----T---T Velites engage, then retreat through the gaps as the enemy approaches.
The hastati take the first enemy charge, and both they and the principes throw their pila into the enemy. If the hastati don't break the enemy or start to take too many casualties, you can withdraw them through the gaps in the principes with no loss of formation, and charge the principes in. If the principes fail to break the enemy, the triarii move in through the gaps again. This way you always have fresh troops available, whilst the enemy have to fight through a meat grinder, and can't even risk chasing fleeing troops.
